WESTFIELD – The Police Department is advising motorists of traffic precautions and changes set for Saturday when the Westfield Kiwanis Club hosts the city’s annual Independence Day celebration at Stanley Park.
Both ends of Lloyds Hill Road, which connects Route 20 with Western Avenue, will be closed to traffic between 6 and 10 p.m. to accommodate traffic flow along Western Avenue, where the park is located.
At 8:30 p.m. the section of Western Avenue directly in front of Stanley Park will be shut down and remain closed until the fireworks display is complete.
At the close of the celebration, vehicles departing onto Western Avenue will be required to turn right and head towards the city’s downtown.
Vehicles parked in the Westfield State College south commuter lot and those on side streets will also take a right turn onto Western Avenue and travel eastbound away from the park.
Vehicles parked in the college’s commuter parking lot, adjacent to the Second Congregational Church lots and on permitted side streets on the north side of Western Avenue will turn right onto Western Avenue and travel west away from the park. By bearing right when Western Avenue becomes Bates Road, motorists will eventually hook up with Route 20
No parking will be allowed on some side streets, including Kensington Avenue and Granville Road which immediately border the park during the celebration to facilitate traffic flow after the display.
Community Police Sgt. Steve Dickinson said no pets will be allowed in Stanley Park during the celebration. Also prohibited during the celebration will be alcoholic beverages and glass bottles.
