WESTFIELD — Police have identified the victims of Monday's drowning in Hampton Ponds as Daniel L. and Patricia E. Cyr, a married couple from Westfield.
The Cyrs, of 43 Pequot Point Road, drowned after entering the pond from a boat shortly after 6 p.m. Monday, Westfield Police Capt. Hipolito Nunez said. Nunez described the incident as an accident.
Daniel Cyr, 64, jumped into Hampton Ponds to save their small dog. He began to struggle, and Patricia Cyr, 61, jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue him, police said.
Authorities were called to the scene at about 6:23 p.m. Monday. Daniel Cyr was taken to Noble Hospital in Westfield, while Patricia Cyr was transported to Holyoke Medical Center. The couple's dog survived.
Two jet ski riders were credited with pulling the Cyrs from the water and alerting two nearby boats, whose operators then transported the husband and wife toward shore in separate vessels, the Westfield News reports.
State environmental police, investigators from the office of Hampden District Attorney Mark G. Mastroianni, and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section assisted Westfield police with the probe. Westfield firefighters and emergency medical technicians also responded.
Monday's double drowning was the second tragic accident at Hampton Ponds this year. In June, West Springfield resident Nicolae Ulinici drowned after she entered the water from a boat and never resurfaced, authorities said.
The Cyrs lived on Hampton Ponds. Pequot Point Road, located on a small peninsula along the western shore, juts into upper Pequot Pond and lower Hampton Ponds.
