Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
WESTFIELD – State police believe an 18-year-old city woman was consuming fast food at the wheel when she got into a crash with a state trooper early Sunday at the intersection of Route 202 and Old County Road, state police said.
Tia Grover and state Trooper Daniel Moran, who is attached to the Russell Barracks, were treated at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and released, state police spokesman David Procopio said.
The accident occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. when Grover failed to yield for a flashing red light at the intersection. Moran, driving on Route 202, collided with the front end of Grover’s car.
Moran had a flashing yellow light at the intersection, Procopio said.
Evidence indicates that Grover may have been eating from a bag of McDonald’s food in her lap at the time of the crash. Grover later told police that she had been driving to visit a friend and did not remember how the accident occurred, Procopio said.
Both vehicles, Moran’s 2006 Crown Victoria and Grover’s 2003 Buick Century, had to be towed from the scene, Procopio said.
Police cited Grover for failure to yield to a traffic signal, failure to wear a seat belt and, pertaining to the fast food, impeded operation of a motor vehicle, Procopio said.
