GOSHEN – A 49-year-old Westfield resident died Saturday night after the canoe he was in capsized in Upper Highland Lake in the Daughters of the American Revolution state forest.

Police did not release the man’s name, but said his body was found at about 10:45 p.m. after an extensive search that involved a half-dozen different police units, including the Northfield Police Dive and Rescue Team which searched underwater and the State Police helicopter which searched from above.

“It was a very large operation,” said State Trooper Reid Bagley, a police spokesman.

Police received the report that one man had possibly drowned at about 7:50 p.m. Saturday.

“There were three people in a canoe that capsized and two people made it to shore and the third did not,” he said.

Bagley said the drowning is still under investigation.
