WESTFIELD - A porch fire on a two-family house at 2 Parker Ave. Wednesday night caused an estimated $15,000 damage and displaced two families, Deputy Chief Patrick Kane said.

The fire, reported just before 8 p.m., was confined to the outside of the house, Kane said. The second floor and attic sustained some smoke damage, he said.

There were no injuries. The first firefighters were on scene within three minutes, Kane said. An engine from the North Side station was returning to the station from another call when the call for Parker Avenue came in, he said.

They were able to knock down the fire quickly before it had a chance to get inside the house, he said.

Kane said investigators determined the fire was caused by improper disposal of smoking materials. The two residents on the first floor and two residents on the second floor each said they would find temporary lodging.

The Westfield Gas & Electric Light Department responded to the scene to shut off the utilities, Kane said.
