NORTHAMPTON – A Westfield man charged with causing the death of a 10-year-old boy in a boating mishap pleaded innocent Wednesday to manslaughter, homicide by vessel and homicide by vessel while under the influence of alcohol.

According to prosecutors, Steven J. Morse, 37, of 65 Deborah Lane struck Augustus Adamopoulos and his father, James Adamopoulos with a speedboat on Norwich Lake in Huntington on Aug. 17. The father and son were in a kayak. Augustus Adamopoulos, known to friends and family as “Gus,” died of blunt force trauma. James Adamopoulos suffered a leg injury.

Hampshire Superior Court Judge Mary Lou Rup released Morse on his own recognizance with the conditions that he stay away from the Adamopoulos family, not operate a boat, refrain from drugs and alcohol and submit to random testing.
