Shelters will be established at various schools if necessary.

WESTFIELD - The path of Hurricane Irene and its impact the city will be closely monitored by emergency management personnel through the weekend with updates and notices available to the public through the Westfield emergency notification telephone network and on the city's internet website.

Emergency Management Director Jimmie D. Wiggs reminded residents Friday to inventory their emergency supplies such as flashlights, batteries, water and food.

"We are prepared for what ever Irene throws at us," said Wiggs. "Right now we are prepared for a lot of rain and will keep a close eye on water levels both for the Westfield River and Little River," he said.

The city has shelters at various schools that will be used if needed, he said.

Residents can check for storm and local notices at www.wema.cityofwestfield.org; www.cityofwestfield.org. Notices will also be telephoned to residents registered on the city's emergency notification telephone network and Wiggs suggested that residents not already registered do so. "That can be accomplished at our website," he said.
