WESTFIELD – The Business Improvement District, with support of its downtown merchant members, is in the middle of a promotion aimed at drawing shoppers to the downtown.

While the focus of the promotion is on the holiday season, the event continues into early spring when the on-going $14 million reconstruction of Elm, Main and Broad streets with Park Square Green be in the final phase of completion.

“Think Westfield First, Buy Local” is an event that encourages people to shop in Westfield and earn chances to win a gift basket, said BID director Lisa G. McMahon.

“We have planted the seed to encourage local purchases and we are trying to get residents and Westfield shoppers to commit to shopping in downtown Westfield,” said McMahon. “That will make a huge difference in the success of our downtown,” she said.

Most merchants in the downtown, from Depot Square at the Great River Bridge to South Broad Street are participating in the promotion, she said.

Shoppers are being asked to make three purchases, from different merchants during the event. Placards have been printed and available at stores and shops.

“We also remind shoppers that for every dollar spent locally, 68 cents of that dollar stays in the community,” said McMahon.

Shoppers must fill out information concerning the businesses where the three purchases were made, have the merchant initial the card and then enter that card into a raffle. The cards can be dropped at boxes located at the Westfield Athenaeum and at various downtown businesses.

Two raffles are being held. One is Friday while the second is scheduled for April 2. The promotion runs through March 31.

Raffle winners will receive a gift basket containing gift certificates and merchandise from local business and each will contain an iPod Nano.

Information concerning the promotion and participating merchants is also posted on the BID’s website: www.thedistrictwestfield.com.
