The crash was reported Monday night at Northwest Road and Western Avenue.
WESTFIELD - Two adults from Russell and their three young children, involved in a two-car crash at Northwest Road and Western Avenue Monday night, were treated at Noble Hospital and released.
A brother and sister from Worcester, Daniel and Esther Amoateng, both 23, were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following the crash, police said. It was reported shortly after 7:10 p.m.
Daniel Amoateng was listed in good condition Tuesday and Esther Amoateng was treated and released, a Baystate spokesman said.
Police Lt. Jerome Pitoniak identified the members of the Russell family as Nicholas Balboni, 38; his wife Tara, 37, and their three children, Leo, 8; Cecilia, 6, and Jesse, 5.
Tara Balboni, reached Tuesday afternoon, said family members are recuperating at home.
Balboni praised the emergency personnel that responded to the crash scene, “They did a great job,” she said. “They made us feel really comfortable.”
Pitoniak said all the adults involved in the crash were wearing seat belts and the children were restrained with age-appropriate safety restraints.
The crash occurred, Pitoniak said, as Nicholas Balboni drove the family’s 2001 Honda west on Western Avenue. Esther Amoateng, driving a 1997 Honda north on Northwest Road, apparently failed to stop at a stop sign there, he said.
“Either they went through or stopped and went out,” Pitoniak said of the Amoateng vehicle.
After the initial impact, the Amoatengs’ Honda spun and hit a utility pole, he said.
Daniel Amoateng suffered lacerations to his head and neck and may have broken one or more ribs, Pioniak said.
Esther Amoateng was driving on a learner’s permit, Pioniak said. She was legally behind the wheel, however, because her brother was a licensed driver, he said.
Pitoniak said the intersection is not known for being a trouble spot.
