Five injured in Western Avenue crash following Jose Torres funeral

A Westfield State police cruiser driven by a campus police officer and carrying a university administrator and two staff members was involved in a crash with the state police vehicle.

WESTFIELD - Three Westfield State University officials, a university police officer and a state police trooper were injured Tuesday afternoon in Western Avenue crash that happened shortly after funeral services for fallen Westfield police officer Jose Torres.

All five people were transported to Noble Hospital for treatment, according to state police spokesman David Procopio.

The crash happened at about 1:15 p.m.

According to Procopio, a Westfield State police cruiser driven by the campus police officer and carrying a campus administrator and two staff members was leaving the funeral when it was involved in a crash with the state police vehicle.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the administrator and the state trooper remained at the hospital for evaluation. The others had been treated and released.

Names of the people involved in the accident were not being released by the state police. The Westfield News is reporting that university president Even Dobelle was the administrator injured in the crash. 

The accident remains under investigation by the state police and the Westfield State police department.
