WESTFIELD – An 86-year-old city man, struck by a pickup truck while riding a bicycle on Western Avenue Tuesday afternoon, died overnight from his injuries at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, police said.

Capt. Hipolito Nunez said police have not released the man's name, pending notification of his next-of-kin.

Police said the bicyclist was struck by the pickup in front of Westfield State University’s Woodward Center at about 2 p.m. The man was taken to Baystate where he was initially listed in critical condition.

Police said both the bicyclist and the pickup were headed in the same direction. Additional information, including the name of the driver, has not been released. The driver has not been charged in the accident, which remains under investigation by the police department's traffic bureau.

Westfield police closed Western Avenue from Loring Lane to Overlook Drive as they investigated the crash Tuesday.

The Woodward Center is Westfield State University’s athletic fieldhouse. It is located across Western Avenue from Stanley Park.
